Saint Tryphon Cathedral

This is one of the most impressive symbols of Kotor town
and one of two Roman Catholic cathedrals in Montenegro. Located in the very
center of the Old Town, in the square of the same name, this cathedral is one of the
best places to meet with Kotor`s artists and artisans, medieval goldsmiths etc.
Kotor was famous for all around the Mediterranean.

This Romanesque style church was built and consecrated in 1166 in the place
where used to be a small church dedicated also to Saint Tryphon. The relics of Saint
Tryphon, also known as protector of the Kotor city, lie in this Cathedral, in the silver
coffin and it is interesting to mention that those relics were transported from
Carigrad (Istanbul) in 809 and were kept in a small church in Kotor until the
cathedral was built.

Beside the St Tryphon cathedral there are several churches that we warmly suggest
to visit. By visiting those buildings, regardless you are a believer or not, you will
gain insight into preserved historical art, better understanding of the way of life of
locals and the union of different cultural influences in such a small place
